johncollins.bmpIt is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of a true friend of the Ohio Rural Water family, John Collins passed away on May 9, 2012, after a brave battle with cancer.  John was a former ORWA board member and retired General Manager of Le-Ax Water, in Athens, Ohio.  He was a guiding influence at ORWA during our early, formative years and continued to be a positive force for many years.  John was most recently recognized for his contributions to ORWA with the prestigious John Wolf Award, the Association’s highest honor.  This award is presented to individuals who have dedicated their lives to improving the quality of life in rural Ohio and who exemplify the true meaning of Quality on Tap.  John will definitely be missed by us all.

 
ORWA Helps Scioto County Regional Water Authority Write Endorsed Source Water Protection Plan

On March 15, 2012, representatives of the Scioto Regional Water Authority were presented with a Certificate of Recognition by Ohio EPA for their completion of a Source Water Protection Plan.  The Plan selects numerous awareness-raising and notification strategies for protecting Scioto Regional’s well field, which is located along the Scioto River, just west of Lucasville, in Scioto County, Ohio.  The well field has not experienced contamination in the past, but contains numerous potential sources of contamination within the capture zone of its well field.  Kyle Bohland of the Ohio Rural Water Association facilitated the protection planning process with Scioto Regional staff in 2011, and helped write the water company’s Protection Plan. 

During a discussion of the Protection Plan’s components and the viewing of an air-photo poster map of the protection area, board members asked several questions related to the establishment and regulation of activities within the one and five year time of travel for their well field.  Scioto Regional staff were encouraged to update their plan regularly, and, when necessary, to call on the various state agencies that regulate the activities of potential contaminant sources within their source water protection area.
