The Ohio Rural Water Association (ORWA) is excited to explore the development of a Women of Rural Water Committee within our organization. This committee will focus on fostering knowledge, professional growth, and opportunities for women in the water and wastewater industry. Operating as an independent, self-governing body, the committee will also serve in an advisory capacity to ORWA, particularly for events such as conferences.
The primary goal of the Women of Rural Water Committee is to amplify the representation of women within our membership. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women account for only 7.3% of water and wastewater treatment plant operators, highlighting their underrepresentation in technical roles within the industry. However, women play a critical role in water organizations, as they represent a larger percentage of professionals in administrative, financial, and communications roles—positions that often have an outsized influence despite their smaller overall numbers.
By creating this committee, ORWA aims to celebrate and support the vital contributions of women across all facets of the water industry, while encouraging greater diversity and inclusion within our field.
