Thanks to a grant from the Ohio Water Development Authority, the Ohio Rural Water Association has developed a program to assist its member public water systems with the development and upkeep of their Asset Management Plans; to assist in compliance with the Ohio EPA's requirements, and in creating more efficient and financially stable systems throughout Rural Ohio.

What is asset management?
It has many different definitions but it boils down to getting the most out of your assets at the lowest cost to the system. In other words, a water system should be servicing assets frequently enough that they are doing what they are meant to, without spending more time or money than is necessary to achieve those results.
Ohio EPA is developing rules to reflect the statutory charge of Senate Bill 2 that will work along with recently enacted capability rules. Both rules are aimed at addressing the managerial, technical and financial capability of water systems. A successful asset management program should cut down on the number of disruptions in service due to lack of planning and/or maintenance.

- –Operation and maintenance programs
- –Emergency preparedness and contingency planning program
- –Criteria and timelines for infrastructure rehabilitation and replacement
- –Approved capacity projections and capital improvement planning
- –Long-term funding strategy to support asset management program implementation
